Pressing Method to Determine Qi Flow in Pulse Diagnosis (Hemodynamic Method)
(c) William R. Morris 2008
The flow of qi may be analyzed with a moderate level of pressure in order to identify where there are accumulations and subsequent deficiencies along the trajectory of a process. For instance, in the analysis of night time wei flow, if the lung is full and tense while the liver is weak and feeble, it suggests that qi is not flowing from the lung to the liver along the controlling cycle which is the flow of wei qi during the night.
In this methodology, a greater level of pressure is used to see if any qi and blood gets to an organ along the trajectory of a process. An example would be to press the liver position almost to occlusion in order to see if the qi and blood arrive in the heart position. If it doesn’t, then the liver is not nourishing the heart.
The standard base position: Place the index, middle and ring fingers evenly at the qi depth, then adjust them so they are at the qi, blood and organ depths correspondingly. All modifications of the fingers begin from this position.
